Living Life in a Fish Bowl!

Gloria’s take on life.

numbers are my friend

I am a numbers girl.     I have always been a numbers girl.   In the numbers world things are  black and white.    Your checking account either balances or it doesn’t.   My spreadsheet either works or it doesn’t.

If it doesn’t, then by looking closely at all the numbers, I can locate the problem.  Sometimes this is more  challenging than other times.  Sometimes it does frustrate me and I have learned to walk away from it for a while.   One thing is certain, if it doesn’t balance the mistake is somewhere.   As a numbers girl, I just can’t  ignore it when it doesn’t balance or worse yet  – make the necessary addition or subtraction to make it work.  No, with numbers it will work when it is done correctly.

Computer programs have certainly made working with numbers easier.  Yet sometimes I get nostalgic for a pencil, a good eraser,  and a huge spreadsheet laid out in front of me.

remember when?

Last Saturday I sat in on this class.  For many people this would be a boring class but not for me.  diploma

I have been doing church finance for at least 20 years.  With numbers there is always more to learn.   Knowing too little can be a nightmare.  Yet, keeping up with the ever-changing rules is not always easy.

Black and white — cut and dry  —  that’s what numbers are.  It is all about formulas – having the right formula – and working those formulas correctly.

With God there isn’t a  formula that we put in and then get out whatever it is we want.  Yet some people still treat God like a vending machine and then get upset with Him when He doesn’t give them whatever it was they expected.

For some people,  God’s will for their life come down to expecting  God to stamp His approval on whatever it is they want.    That just isn’t how it works.  Furthermore, what makes us think that we could possible plan better  than God?

Jeremiah 29:11 (NASB) For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.”

What does God expect of us?  Be a student of His Word and you will find out.

1 John 5:3 NASB) For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.”

Micah 6:8 (NKJV)  “He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you. But to do justly,  To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?”

Romans 12:17-21 (MSG) “Don’t hit back; discover beauty in everyone. If you’ve got it in you, get along with everybody. Don’t insist on getting even; that’s not for you to do. ‘I’ll do the judging,’ says God. ‘I’ll take care of it.’ Our Scriptures tell us that if you see your enemy hungry, go buy that person lunch, or if he’s thirsty, get him a drink. Your generosity will surprise him with goodness. Don’t let evil get the best of you; get the best of evil by doing good.”

Psalm 34:14 (NASB) Depart from evil and do good; Seek peace and pursue it.”

While there are no magic formulas, what is black and white with God is that we all have sinned.  (Romans 3;23)  The price for sin is death.  (Romans 6:23)  Jesus paid that price and is the only way to the Father.  (John 14:26)   Repent and believe.  (Mark 1:14,  John 3:16)  He will never leave us nor forsake us.  (Hebrews 13:5)  Jesus has prepared  a place for us and will one day take us there.  (John14:2-3)

til next time

  1. Being a numbers girl myself, I love this and was agreeing all along – and I also said ‘amen’ to the application.

We cannot ‘bend’ the rules. When there isn’t a definite “thou shalt” or “thou shalt not” there is ALWAYS a principle set out clearly in His Word and He will ALWAYS reveal it to us when we are truly willing to obey.

Thankfully, there is also no deviation in His promises. What He says is absolute. What He promises is guaranteed. He CANNOT break His word.

    What an incredibly awesome God!

    • Amen Angela — and how wonderful that the principle is there. God does lead us in the paths of righteousness. He makes a way where there seems to be no way. He is worthy of all our praise and our 100% not partial but 100% devotion. By the way, it is so good to have you back in the blogosphere Angela

      • Thanks Gloria. It is good to be back, although only for short times.
I am moving a little more freely now, but the specialist last week told me I am most unlikely to get more movement in my ankle. It can be pushed to a right angle, but won’t bend any further forward, which means I can only walk in half steps, or hobble. Maybe when the swelling reduces. which could take another year, there might be a gain in movement.
