count it all joy – 6

Count it all joy – step 6

James talks about counting it all joy when we face all sorts of trials. The testing of our faith produces faith muscles – patience and endurance. (James 1:2-4) How do we count it all joy?

I believe that we find the answer in James 4:7-8
Step one – Submit to God (11/20/19 post)
Step two – Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (11/21/19 post)
Step three – Draw near to God (11/22/19)
Often people will stop here but there is more.

Step four – Cleanse your hands (11/23/19)
Step five – Purify your heart (yesterday’s post)
Step six – do not be double minded

I can’t talk about counting it all joy and not address double mindedness. This gets in the way of living the abundant life. (John 10:10) It gets in the way of walking in joy and peace. It creates an internal conflict. It destroys our witness.

Double minded – unstable – hypocrite – wavering – insincere – compromising beliefs – keeping all options open – one foot in the world’s camp and one foot in God’s camp — a chameleon – causing a constant internal conflict.

Ask God to help you recognize the first signs of a double-minded attitude trying to creep in. Guard against it.

Where is your mind set

“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” Romans 8:5-6 ESV

Purify your heart – this has to do with your inner life. Be sincere. Seek to please God. 1 Peter (1:22) tells us we accomplish this by obedience to God’s truth.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
Point out anything in me that offends you,
and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” Psalm 139:23-24 NLT

Cleanse your hands — this is an action we take. When Isaiah talks about washing yourself – ceasing to do evil is listed.  In 1 Tim 2:8 Paul tells us to lift up holy hands without wrath and doubting.
psalm 34 14

Make choices that please God.
Are you dabbling in sin? Quit it. Cleanse your hands from things/actions that will zap your joy.

Draw near to God. Simple and yet so often neglected. When life’s problems heat up – kick up your time at His feet. The harder the trial- the hotter the fire – the more time is needed at the feet of Jesus.

Sadly too often we waste precious time fretting and fixating on the problem instead of looking to the one who is able to help. (Psalm 46:1) When we look to Jesus, (Hebrews 12:2) for His joy in our strength, (Neh 8:10) there is a shift in our attitude.

“You have given me greater joy than those who have abundant harvests of grain and new wine.” Psalm 4:7 NLT

Resist – withstand the action of

Jesus tells us in John 10:10 the thief comes to steal, kill and destroy. That is the devil’s action. Don’t get in agreement with him by believing his lies. Don’t go there.

When we submit to God and resist the devil, he will flee. When we are not entertaining the lies of the devil, we can ‘count it all joy’ because our joy is found in Christ. Jesus is the way, truth and the life. (John 14:6)

Tests are the things testimonies are made of.

count it all joy -1

James talks about counting it all joy when we face all sorts of trials. The testing of our faith produces faith muscles – patience and endurance. (James 1:2-4) How do we do that?

I believe that we find the answer in James 4:7-8

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

Today let’s look at submit to God.

Don’t get trapped in the small picture. God sees the whole thing. We can trust Him and we display that trust when we submit to Him. Reaffirm your dependence on Him. Offer up a sacrifice of praise.

“Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. 16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” Heb 13:15-16 ESV

Continually – this is important to counting it all joy. Before the problem arises we should be praising Him. During the trial we continue the sacrifice of praise and on the other side of the trial – praise.

(Tomorrow step 2.)

Offering up praise,

chronic stress?

Stress can be a big deal.  Some of us are walking around in chronic stress.  What can we do to reduce stress?

The Bible tells us:
“You keep him in perfect peace
whose mind is stayed on you,
because he trusts in you.” Isaiah 26:3 ESV

Where our mind is, where our thoughts go will impact the amount of stress we deal with.

“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.” Romans 8:5-7 ESV

“To set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.”  There is the key to handling stress. Where is your mind set?

Meditation and memorization of the scripture are huge tools to setting your mind on the things of God. When is the last time you meditated? (Rehashing negative things is a form of mediation. It is not a good form and it will not lead you to peace.)

Here are a couple great scriptures to memorize and then meditate on when you feel stress knocking.
“In God I have put my trust, I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me?” Psalm 56:11 NASB

“The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” Psalm 118:6 ESV
