Living Life in a Fish Bowl!

Gloria’s take on life.

what I love about christianity

Christian life – faith working through love (Galatians 5:6)

These five verses in Romans contain the things I love about being a Christian.  It is not an  all encompassing list, for there are so many things – too many to name.

Here are the things listed in Romans 5 that  I love:   God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, faith, peace, hope, tribulations, endurance, character and love.

Romans 5:1-5 “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”

You might think tribulations shouldn’t be on that list of things I love. Yet, without tribulations/problems/suffering I would be self-centered and impossible to live with and so would you.

Trials bring me to my knees before God. Having gone through suffering, and seeing how God works in and through it, helps me to build up endurance.  Endurance is needed.  We are not in a sprint but a marathon.

Our character needs developing. This is a life long process resulting in a deeper hope in God and His promises

God doesn’t want us to be a wishy washy Christian. Our character is developed as we hold fast to Christ and go through tribulations. With each one we learn to trust God more. We grow.

Tomorrow I will look more closely at verse 1.

rules?

Some people think rules don’t apply to them. I am sure you have met some of those people. However, it will catch up with them sooner or later. Truth is God sees. God knows. You can’t get away with it when it comes to God.

Jesus tells us:

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,” John 14:15-16

A Helper – the Holy Spirit — this is such a relief. We don’t have to do it on our own. The Holy Spirit is with us – helping us.

This also takes away our excuse that we just can’t help it, or that’s just the way we are. No, we are able to change because the Holy Spirit helps us to change and to grow. We are over-comers! We are victorious!

“By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” 1 John 5:2-4 (NASB)

What are these commandments?

“And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:29-31

All that God’s Word asks of us comes down to living out these two commandments.

what’s growing on your tree?

No man is an island.  I heard that all the time while I was growing up.  Look for ways you can help others was another things I heard a lot.  How we live – matters.
So how should we live?
Galatians 5:22-23 – the Fruit of the Spirit.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is
love,
joy,
peace,
patience,
kindness,
goodness,
faithfulness,
gentleness,
self-control;
against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23 (NASB)

As I meditate on these verses, I ask God to help this fruit grow in my life. Memorizing these verses has helped me to be more aware of these nine areas of my life.

He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water,
Which yields its fruit in its season
And its leaf does not wither;
And in whatever he does, he prospers.”  Psalm 1:3 NASB)

What is growing on your tree?

Let’s look at Galatians 5:24

“Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. “

What does it mean to crucify the flesh?
The simple definition is to say no to things that you know are displeasing to God. Verse 25 goes on to explain it.
“25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.”

Waking in love not hate,
joy not melancholy,
peace not being always upset,
patience not indifference,
kindness not meanness,
goodness not cruelty,
faithfulness not disloyalty,
gentleness not hardness and
with self-control not instability.

How’s your walk?
