Living Life in a Fish Bowl!

Gloria’s take on life.

attitude

How’s your soul? (will, mind, emotions)

My morning started out a little rough.  Did you know that you can change your day by changing your attitude?

My attitude was heading south. There are a ‘million’ things I could focus on concerning my health and the way I am feeling BUT I want to enjoy this day. There are no do overs. So as with anything in my life – I took it to God.

Maybe you need to pray this prayer with me.

Good morning God. This is the day You have made and I am wanting to choose to rejoice in it. In order to do that I need Your help. Help me to not fixate on the pain, the ‘now what’, or the ‘how’, but to keep my eyes on You. You are good! You love me and You are working all things out for my good. Yes, even this pain. Help me to see beyond myself, to see the opportunities You have for me today. I can do what you set before me this day because You are with me. I choose hope! I choose You, Jesus! (Psalm 118:24, 46:1, 2 Cor 10:5, Heb 12:2, Rom 8:28, Col 4:5, Phil 4:13)

I also looked to God’s word to speak to my heart. If you haven’t read Ephesian 3 lately, I encourage you to read it.

My take on a few of the verses:

V6. God’s plan is that we belong to Him

V7. it is a privilege to serve God

V14 because of Jesus and our faith in Him, we can come to God boldly and confidently. We don’t have to have it all together or say the right things but we come just as we are.

V14-15 there is something special about kneeling before God – surrendering to the Creator of everything

V16 is my verse to hold on to today!

V17 trusting Christ (in the good and the bad, health and pain) sinks our roots deep in God’s love and that keeps us strong – I want that!

V18 God’s love – nothing greater (wide, long, high, deep) Makes me want to break out into song “Oh, how He loves us so. Oh how He loves us.”

V19 we don’t just know of His love, we experience His love

V20 God gets the glory! He is able to do more than we can even imagine

Yes, I am now ready to face the day as a mighty child of God.

What about you?

til next time

anchor

Are you using your anchor?

…My hope is in you.” Psalm 39:7

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” Hebrews 6:19

We are like a ship at sea. Sometimes it is smooth sailing, other times we are tossed up and down seemingly in great danger. Our harbor (final destination) is Heaven. Temptations, persecutions, problems, trials, obstacles, are the wind and the waves that threaten to shipwreck us. On our journey, we will encounter all sorts of beauty and danger.

One thing remains sure. We have an anchor that will keep us steady and on course. Our hope in Jesus is the anchor of our soul. Our hope in Him will see us through the storms.

As the old hymn states “We are anchored in Jesus the storms of life we’ll brave. We are anchored in Jesus, we fear no wind or wave… We are anchored to the Rock of Ages.”

The enemy of our soul (will, mind, emotions) likes nothing better than to see people in despair – hopeless. For he knows, maybe even more than we know, that hope is a most powerful weapon.

Hope is indeed the anchor of our soul.

…because my hope, Lord, is in you.” Psalm 25:21

All our hope is in Christ!

resting

How’s your soul? (Will, mind, emotions)

Are you off to a good start or do you find yourself weary? Jesus addresses this in Matthew 11 (28-30)

“Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” (NLT)

I have a friend who insists that bad luck comes in threes. I don’t believe in bad luck. Bad things happen but that should come as no surprise when we are told over and over again things like ‘count it all joy when you face trials’ James 1:2 – ‘in the world you will have trouble….’ John 16:33 — ‘rejoice always, again I say rejoice’ Phil 4:4 –‘even though the going is rough’ 1 Peter 1:6 — ‘endure hardship’ 2 Tim 2:3 — what we suffer now’ Romans 8:18 ….

When life starts to press in on you and things seem to go from bad to worse, remember what Jesus says to you. “Come to me!” Make the time. Open your bible and read what He has to say to you. Sit quietly before Him and allow His gentleness to permeate you. Cast your cares on Him. (1 Peter 5:6-7) Let His peace wash over you. (Phil 4:4-7) Let Him give you rest.

Resting in Jesus,

waiting 4 of 7

“Wait for the Lord;
Be strong and let your heart take courage;
Yes, wait for the Lord.” Psalm 27:14

Waiting patiently is not for the weak, but waiting will make the weak strong in Christ. We begin to recognize our strength when we truly are depending on Christ. Our courage comes from our relationship with Him. Let God arise and let His enemies be scattered. (Psalm 68:1)

“Our soul waits for the Lord;
He is our help and our shield.” Psalm 33:20

God will come through. Though the night seems long, morning will come. He is our refuge and strength. (Psalm 40:1) In the light of eternity, it really isn’t as long as it seems. (2 Cor 4:17)

I am reminded of a powerful little chorus.
My soul waits for the Lord
in the hope of His promise
in the hope of His promise
my deliverance will come.
My soul waits for the Lord
through the night til the morning
like a nightwatchmen waiting
for the coming of the dawn. (taken from Psalm 130:6)

Trusting His timing,

it’s monday – how’s your soul?

Here it is the Monday morning.   We pack a lot into our weekends so it is not unusual for  exhaustion to set in on Monday morning.

I want to do it all!  Yet, it can cause weariness to set in if I’m not careful.  (hmm, I am starting to see a pattern in my life.)

matthew 11 28

Sadly, when our schedule gets overloaded – spending time with Jesus can get squeezed out of our day.   It isn’t like it is an intentional thing but nonetheless it can so easily happen. Then is it any wonder we find ourselves overwhelmed?

I encourage you to be adamant about spending quiet time with God. If your days are filled like mine – it may be the only quiet time you get each day but it will be enough.

Jesus is more than enough.

Another thing you can give yourself and others is the gift of laying down expectations. My mother set the bar high for her daughters.  She worked full time and her house always looked great.   She rose early and was the last one to bed.  I can’t live up to that expectation of myself.   Laying that down has been very liberating.

“Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.” 3 John 2 (NIV)

How’s your soul?

Maybe spending time with Jesus right now is what you truly need.

Selah,

i want to do it all!

How’s your soul? (will, mind, emotions)

“Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And all that is within me, bless His holy name.” Psalm 103:1

Often I have to make the choices so that I am not going to get crazy stressed.   I have to talk with God about it often, otherwise I am pretty much programed to over-work and over-extend myself.

I want to do it all!

“He makes me to lie down in green pastures: he leads me beside the still waters.” Psalm 23:2 Yes, still waters in the middle of Christmas prep.

Lysa Terkeurst shares (in her book The Best Yes) four important things to consider when making commitments. Will this fit physically, financially, spiritually, and emotionally?

I generally have no problem deciding if I can physically do the task, if we have the money for the task or if the task is in line with God’s Word. However, do I have the emotional energy needed to complete the task? This is the one that I have tended to ignore in the past.

Here’s what can happen when we don’t consider if we have the emotional energy needed. We may grumble the whole time. We may take it out on those closest to us. We may even not follow through with what we had said that we would do. Something will give and usually it isn’t a good thing.

When I ask myself those 4 questions then I am able to decide my best yes. Just because it is a good thing doesn’t mean it is good for me to do it at this time. As much as I want to do it all, I can’t. And neither can you.

How’s my soul? Good, real good!

What about you? How is your soul?

Silah,

is joy possible?

Joy!  Yes, please!  I want my life to be filled with joy.  The Word tells me that the joy of the Lord is my strength.  (Nehemiah 8:10)

“Heart, body, and soul are filled with joy.” Psalm 16:9

Yes! Filled. With. Joy!

Verse 8 gives us some instruction on how to be filled with joy.

“I am always thinking of the Lord; and because he is so near, I never need to stumble or fall.” Psalm 16:8

What is always on your mind? I wonder how much different people’s lives would be if their thoughts were of the Lord?

He is with us, for us and loves us. I choose God. I choose joy. When situations come up that threaten to steal my joy, I pause and remember God sees, knows and is making a way.

“Heart, body, and soul are filled with joy.” Psalm 16:9

God is good!
